Homework
Homework is given in the form of a packet to scholars each Monday, and are turned in each Friday. Each packet is includes one to two reading passages, and CMS generated EOG style of homework. Please click the "Example EOG Homework" link to see what your scholar should be working on each night. Scholars are also highly encouraged to find a comfortable place to curl up and read a great book that is on the reading level for 60 minutes each night. For additional practice of math and reading skills please send your scholar to the following links below. They have been given their own username and password for each site. Curriculum
Each day your scholar engages in rigorous curriculum preparing them to become 21st century independent readers, writers, mathematicians and thinkers! Below is a breakdown of how much time your scholar spends on average in each core subject during their school day. Reading - 90 Minutes During reading your scholar receives instruction using the Balanced Literacy approach, which emphasizes brief yet effective strategic mini-lessons so that scholars have more time to read and practice the reading strategies they have learned. Ms. Smith and I confer with students individually and in groups on a daily basis, reminding them of their goals as readers and coaching them along the way to maximize reading growth. In third grade scholars are introduced to a myriad of texts: narrative and expository non-fiction, biographies, fairy tales, fables, mysteries, realistic fiction, and books with an emphasis on social issues to name a few. Writing - 40 Minutes During Writer's Workshop scholars are also taught using the mini-lesson format. This year our scholars have written in an array of writing genres including, How-to writing, biographies, realistic and narrative fiction to name a few. Math - 90 Minutes During Math Workshop your scholar receives data driven instruction each day. In conjunction with following the CMS math pacing guide, our third grade team assesses student data each week and we plan both our instruction and our independent math workshop groups to address the needs of each scholar. Third graders cover the following standards: multiplication, division, addition and subtractions with regrouping, rounding, graphs, quadrilaterals, area and perimeter, and fractions. |
